Overcome Fear and Find Success
Close your eyes and imagine a life without fear. What would you do if you knew how to overcome fear?
From experience, fear is the biggest obstacle that holds people back from fulfilling their true potential and becoming the best version of themselves.
I have faced fear, fear of failure, fear of abandonment, fear of success, fear of not being good enough, fear, or fear.
But where does this all come from?
Studies claim humans are the most fearful on the planet because of our ability to learn, think, and create fear in our minds. We scare ourselves by imagining the worst possible outcomes, assuming protection from immediate danger.
You have the choice: Be a victim of your own fears or be brave and push them away.
So, what is Fear?
I came across this acronym which reflects fear in my opinion:
It’s an emotion created by our minds from real or imagined threats. These imagined scenarios end up eating you inside. But here is the truth, these scenarios never happen and it’s up to us to know this.
So, the issue is not fear, it’s how we hold it in our minds.
How to Overcome Fear?
Sounds easier said than done right? Especially when you’re so deep in fear and can’t see a way out. The solution to this all and the good news is that because you’re the root cause of your own fears, you also have a solution to them. Again, you might be thinking of how that makes sense. Well, it’s easy, but only possible if you’re ready to face your fears.
Write Down Your Fears
I’ve felt afraid many times but never knew why. Keeping those fears inside only controls you in a way you shouldn’t be controlled. Prevent this by identifying what the fears are.
Don’t just think about them, write them down. This is more effective than keeping them in your mind. Once you’ve written them down, question them. This will force you to probe yourself into why you are afraid. Questioning like most things, trigger the topic further and allows them to surface.
I will warn you now that this won’t be comfortable but will be worth it in the end.
The reason why you write down the fears and question them is that keeping them locked away will only influence you the wrong way, you want to feel empowered going forward.
That empowerment will come once the fear is identified and you now have full control to make that change you have always wanted to make.
Gratitude is the key and something I use on daily basis to overcome my fears.
Difficult times tend to lead you down the path of fear. It’s that overwhelming feeling, it drains you and you find it difficult to control.
Gratitude will stop you from heading down that path of fear. This doesn’t mean you won’t feel fear, but the feeling will be far less, and you will be stronger and see past this. You will see that struggle and immediately know there is a bright side to it all.
You want to feel happiness all around you. Gratitude will make you feel positive, feel good about yourself, it will also work towards improving your well-being, and build stronger relationships.
When I experienced fear there is always a story attached regardless of what I am fearful of. It always had ‘I can’t do something’ attached to it as well. That fear kept hanging on to my inner critic which always came up with worst-case scenarios. I’m sure you’ve also felt the same at some point.
Fear is a future-oriented process, whilst gratitude is a present one. This is what matters now and not necessarily the future. Working on the now will only improve the future when practicing gratitude. Replace the disempowering thoughts with empowering thoughts, trust me this works.
Something I practice daily. Regardless if fear has set on or not. Firstly, this helps overcome the fear, secondly and most importantly when you’re set with a fear, visualise the outcome you want it to be. Athletes always imagine the successful completion of physical tasks thousands of times over before achieving it. They will never imagine not completing something, they want to finish by being the best. You are capable of the same.
Recite Positive Affirmations
Reciting a list of one affirmation that means something to you, will certainly combat any negative thought pattern you are going through. Reciting affirmations help train the brain to overcome the fears, and surprisingly flip the fear on its head and turn it into a positive statement.
Instead of saying “I am afraid of this interview because I might fail and not get the job” look into the mirror and say to yourself, “I am prepared, I want this, I am ready, I will get this.”
Using positive affirmations daily and often will become stronger and become second nature to you, canceling out any negative thoughts because you’ll start to create a positive statement for them.
The best time to recite a positive affirmation would be first thing in the morning. Make this a ritual for yourself, repeat this over and over, and visualise this to set you up for the rest of the day.
Reach out for help, and motivation
There are things we would never do for ourselves that we would for others. If they are fearful over something we would jump and help them. We would motivate them and support them to get back on track. But we forget about our fears and use this as a screen, which will make you feel good for a few minutes but then your fears will creep back. I did just that until I reached for support and guidance.
Having an external person that knows nothing about you is probably the best person to speak to. They won’t judge you, and their role is to listen, support, and guide you.
